Futures dive … because some questions need depth

Climate adaptation, the energy transition, demographic change, digital and AI-driven disruption, the long arc of social and political shifts … These are the kinds of challenges no single half-day workshop or strategy off-site can do justice to. They unfold over years, cut across sectors, and rarely look the way we expect them to. They demand more than a faster decision-making cycle — they demand a way of thinking that takes time and structure seriously.

  • Could a group genuinely shift how it sees the road ahead in just a few days?
  • Could the future be made tangible enough to think about clearly, not just speculate about?
  • Could a leadership team, a partnership, or a stakeholder group walk into the same room with different mental models — and walk out with shared questions worth working on together?

At PANTOPICON, we believe yes, when the experience is designed for it. We call it a futures dive: an immersive, facilitated process that helps groups step into possible tomorrows, examine them together, and bring the insights back into the decisions and conversations that follow.

A dive is not a chunk of time bracketed by start and end. We see it as the centre of a process — with a deliberate lead-up that frames the right questions, an immersive core that makes those questions tangible, and a lead-out that helps participants carry the insights forward. The dive itself is the moment of depth. The surrounding design is what gives that depth somewhere to go.

WHO

futures dive is intended for groups who need to think together about what’s coming, including:

  • Leadership teams and management groups stepping out of operational pressure to reconsider strategic direction
  • Partnerships, alliances and networks facing shared challenges that no single member can address alone
  • Public agencies, intermunicipal bodies and policy actors navigating long-horizon decisions in complex contexts
  • Cross-sectoral collectives — bringing together civil society, business, government, academia and citizens around common futures
  • Boards and governance bodies seeking depth beyond the next quarterly cycle
  • Project consortia and programme teams at moments of strategic reframing

It works particularly well at moments of transition: when a new strategy is forming, when a partnership is finding its purpose, when the operating context has shifted under your feet, or when the questions everyone has been asking quietly stopped being the right ones.

WHAT

futures dive is an immersive experience designed around three core ingredients:

  1. Foresight methods and scenario work — We use structured foresight tools to map driving forces, surface critical uncertainties, and develop multiple plausible futures. Not as predictions, but as thinking tools that expose assumptions and open up the strategic space.
  2. Tangible, experiential design — We translate abstract futures into things participants can see, touch, and walk through. Scenarios become artefacts. Trends become installations. Possible tomorrows become spaces a group can step inside and react to. This is where Pantopicon’s design practice meets its foresight practice.
  3. Facilitated collective sensemaking — We hold the plurality of perspectives in the room as a resource, not a problem. The goal isn’t consensus on a single future. It’s a richer shared understanding of what’s at stake, what’s possible, and what kinds of decisions matter — built from the diversity of viewpoints in the group.

Each dive is designed from scratch around the group, the context and the questions at hand. No two are the same.

  • L: A week-long process — preparation, immersion and structured follow-through for organisations or networks navigating significant strategic shifts
  • XL: A custom trajectory — designed around your specific situation, time constraints and participant mix, co-developed with you
